Monthly Close
Also known as: Month-End Close, Closing the Books
The monthly close is the routine of finishing a month's books — categorizing everything, reconciling every account, and finalizing the reports.

What it actually means
Closing a month means the books for that period are complete and will not change: every transaction categorized, every bank and card account reconciled, any accruals recorded, and the P&L and balance sheet produced from a file that has been checked. The value is less in any single close than in the rhythm — a closed month arrives while decisions about it are still live, and errors surface within weeks instead of at filing time. Skipping closes does not avoid the work; it defers it into a larger, harder job under deadline, usually at someone else's professional rate.

March's close might finish by April 10, with every account reconciled and a March P&L in hand.
A close that lands in the first couple of weeks of the following month is what makes a P&L useful — you can still change pricing, staffing, or ad spend based on it. Numbers that arrive in April describe a year you can no longer influence.
